SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital - Madison surgical services are offered both within the hospital and at the Surgery and Care Center at SSM Health Dean Medical Group Outpatient Center.
With dozens of surgeons from SSM Health Dean Medical Group and 22 state-of-the-art surgical suites in the hospital – four dedicated to cardiovascular surgery – SSM Health St. Mary's is equipped to handle a wide variety of general surgical procedures as well as numerous surgical specialties such as cardiovascular, colorectal, neurosurgical, ophthalmology, orthopedic, ear/nose/throat, gynecological, urologic, thoracic, hepatobiliary/pancreatic, weight loss surgery and plastic and reconstructive surgical services, among others.
More and more patients are candidates for minimally invasive surgery, procedures that mean smaller incisions, less trauma to the body and a faster recovery. The latest advancement in the operating room is the robot-assisted da Vinci® System, which allows surgeons to operate with more dexterity in smaller openings than ever before. They use a 3-D high-definition camera that is trained on the surgical site to see more precisely, and then they manipulate multiple robotic arms equipped with tiny 8-millimeter, remotely controlled instruments. The da Vinci® System can be used for prostatectomies, hysterectomies, along with urologic and gynecologic procedures, heart procedures and general surgery.
Other minimally invasive surgeries are performed with a laparoscope or endoscope. They include removal of gallbladder, kidney stones, spleen, appendix, and repair of hernias, ruptured disks and esophageal reflux. A wide variety of orthopedic procedures and surgeries on the adrenal gland, small intestine, bladder, eye, and colon are also candidate.
Same-day surgical services are offered through SSM Health St. Mary's, or through the Surgery and Care Center at SSM Health Dean Medical Group. Support services are offered through a Post
Anesthesia Care Unit and through SSM Health St. Mary’s five intensive care
units covering general surgery, neurosurgery, cardiovascular surgery, neonatal
and pediatric health care.
