Depression is not a normal part of aging.

“I’m so depressed!” We often hear those words from people who are experiencing temporary stress or a minor disappointment. But what does being depressed really mean?

Depression is a treatable illness that changes how a person feels emotionally and physically. For seniors, depression may result from other health-related problems; loss of independence; the death of a close relative or friend; a move, such as into a nursing home; or loneliness. It may also occur for no apparent reason.

Some symptoms of depression a person may have include:
• Lose interest in regular daily activities
• Eat too much or too little
• Have problems sleeping or sleeping too much
• Often think about death
• Gain or lose a significant amount of weight
• Feel bad about themselves
• Have difficulty remembering
• Find making simple decisions difficult
• Cry excessively
• Feel hopeless
• Consider suicide

It’s normal to feel some of these things occasionally. But when such feelings continue for two or more weeks, it may be depression.
