During this one-hour program, Dean Clinic urologist Brooke Johnson, MD, and physician assistant Megan Kushner perform a robot-assisted prostatectomy. With commentary by urologist Adam Tierney, MD, viewers are introduced to the da Vinci® Surgical System.
The webcast is hosted by Steve Van Dinter, Regional Director of Media Relations & Public Affairs for SSM Health Care of Wisconsin.
Now being used by an increasing number of surgeons worldwide for delicate urologic surgery and other procedures, the da Vinci® Surgical System employs the latest in surgical and robotic technologies.
This advanced prostate-removal method brings even more credibility to the term "minimally invasive surgery." During a prostatectomy, the surgeons at St. Mary's Hospital utilize a better tool to spare delicate nerves affecting urinary control and sexual function. The procedure requires only five tiny incisions through which the surgeon remotely operates robotic arms affixed with tiny 8-millimeter instruments. Smaller incisions mean less trauma to the body and faster recovery, yielding shorter hospital stays, less pain and superior clinical outcomes.
