Partners in Health Care
Volunteers are important members of our award-winning health care team and share a vital role in the exceptional care our patients receive. They make a commitment to provide high-quality care and a range of health services that support the Mission and values of St. Mary's Hospital, SSM Health and the Franciscan Sisters of Mary.
About Our Program
More than 600 dedicated volunteers, ranging in age from 14-95, make a difference by providing high-quality services that enhance our patients' experience. We offer services in more than 40 areas within the hospital. Some services include direct patient contact while other services offer indirect or no patient contact. All services are equally important. Examples of patient care areas include: emergency room, pediatrics, medical and surgical units and patient registration. Volunteers on our Transport Team stay busy and move around the hospital discharging patients or running errands to support patients and staff. Supportive services that are indirect or have no patient contact include: gift shop, mail & flower delivery, clerical support and social and fundraising events. We also offer sedentary services such as clerical and special projects.
Volunteers make a difference through exceptional services that enhance the experience for patients, visitors and employees within the hospital. We hope you will join us as a volunteer and share your time and talents, develop new skills, learn about health care professions and meet new people while serving the community.

Ronald McDonald Family Room Volunteers
The Ronald McDonald Family Room® located in St. Mary’s Hospital opened in 2012 and is one of the largest Family Rooms in the United States. It is a place where families whose children are inpatients at St. Mary’s hospital can get away for a moment to gather their thoughts, rest and relax, have something to eat and drink and yet be just moments away from their child’s bedside. Family Room volunteers help to extend the mission of the Ronald McDonald House Madison by providing warmth and comfort to families in a time of need.
The commitment of being a volunteer in the Ronald McDonald Family Room is an important one. Volunteers provide reception for families and offer hospitality for families using the Family Room at St. Mary’s Hospital. Due to the high importance and responsibility of this volunteer position, an application for service as well as extensive training is required. Family Room volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and willing to make a one-year commitment.
The college program is now accepting applications for our Fall 2016 semester. Thank you!
