Patient Stories - The Next Chapter

I wrote a story "Just the Beginning" back when I was admitted to St. Mary's in September, 2008 awaiting the birth of my twin daughters. On September 21st at 7:31 and 7:33 am I became a mother again to Eleanor Mae and Elizabeth Marie. They weighed 4#4oz and 4#9oz respectively and were cared for in the NICU. The girls were born via C-section which began at a shift change. The nursing staff and doctors were so incredible and although I don't remember much of the experience actually in the O.R., I am assured by my husband that the staff was very reassuring and kind and took extremely good care of me. Once my girls were delivered, the doctor also had to repair a large hernia, do a tubal ligation and sew everything back together. The surgery took quite a while, but my husband stayed with me every minute. My mom was in the waiting room then the recovery room waiting for me and was treated well also. My pain control was exceptional. Never felt a thing!

I was taken to my room then was able to visit my small miracles in the NICU. They looked so tiny but also so very healthy. We were so blessed that they never required any extra help breathing or anything else other than a nasal gastric tube to eat until they developed their sucking reflex. Libby was able to come home after 8 days in the NICU followed by Ellie 3 days later. Today they are 4 1/2 months old and growing by leaps and bounds. It amazes me each and every day at how fast they are growing and I am forever grateful to the staff at St. Mary’s for their exceptional care of my newborn daughters and me.
