Special patient rooms have been designed to accommodate persons with disabilities. Other services are listed below.
Communication Aids: A variety of aids are available to help those patients needing assistance in communicating. These include:
- Wheelchair accessible public phones with volume control hand sets and outlets for TDDs
- Large number touch-tone phones for the visually impaired
- Voice activated speaker phones for persons with mobility problems
- Pocket Talkers - small amplifiers to aid conversation or amplify TV and radio
- Sign language services for the hearing impaired
- Telecaption devices to assist the hearing impaired in watching television
- Braille services through the Volunteer Braillists and Typists, Inc. organization
- TDDs (Telecommunication Devices for the Deaf), available at the Switchboard and available for other sites upon request
- Foreign Language Interpretation - On-site interpreters and AT&T Language Line instant access to an interpreter for 140 different languages
Facilities: Those who have a disability may take advantage of the following:
- Assistance in selecting food and carrying trays in the Dining Room, where there are specially designed tables to accommodate wheelchairs
- Covered patient drop-off locations at the parking ramp or at the main entrance on Brooks Street
- Handicapped parking spaces on every level of the Park Street parking ramp. Spaces are available for handicapped equipped vans on the ground level of the Park Street parking ramp.
- Walkway connecting the parking ramp with the hospital (Security personnel are available to provide escort assistance)
For the visually impaired, an audiocassette tape, Braille and large print copies are available which contain Patient Rights and Responsibilities and Patient Services.
