SSM Health Care & Dean Health Systems Finalize Merger
SSM Health Care, one of the nation’s largest Catholic health systems, and Dean Health Systems, a large multi-specialty physician group and health plan, have finalized a deal to merge Dean and its subsidiaries, including Dean Health Plan, into SSM Health Care. The merger became effective on September 1 after all necessary regulatory approvals were received.
Both organizations have a national reputation for quality, and the merger creates one of the largest integrated health delivery networks in the country. Dean has expertise in managing physician practices, while SSM has geographic breadth and expertise in acute care.
By bringing together hospitals, clinics and the health plan, SSM and Dean are uniquely positioned to better coordinate care to keep people healthier and improve the patient experience. Over time, this integrated approach will contribute not only to better outcomes for people, but will lower the overall cost of care.
“Dean and SSM have a long tradition of caring for people, and together we will create a new model of care and caring that will lead to healthier people in Wisconsin and beyond,” said SSM Health Care President/CEO William P. Thompson. “We remain absolutely committed to what has made both Dean and SSM successful in the past: doing what is best for the people we serve.”
Thompson said patients will continue to receive the same exceptional care they have always had from SSM hospitals. He added that patients will also not see any disruption in care on the Dean Clinic and Dean Health Plan side.
The merger cements the 100-year relationship between Dean Health Systems and St. Louis-based SSM Health Care. SSM has been present in Wisconsin since 1912 when it opened St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison. SSM also owns St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo, St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital in Janesville, St. Mary’s Care Center in Madison, and St. Clare Meadows Care Center in Baraboo.
Dean Health Systems, Inc. is an organization comprised of a network of 60+ clinics, Dean Health Plan, Davis Duehr Dean eye care, Dean Pharmacy and Navitus Health Solutions.

About SSM Health Care (www.ssmhc.com)
St. Louis based SSM Health Care is a Catholic, not-for-profit health system located in four Midwest states. Its merger with the Wisconsin-based Dean Health Systems transforms SSM from a hospital-based system to a large integrated delivery system with networks in each of its regions.
In Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Illinois and Missouri, SSM includes more than 150 outpatient sites, a pharmacy benefit company, an insurance plan, 18 hospitals, two nursing homes, home care, hospice, a technology company, and an Accountable Care Organization. With more than 1,300 employed physicians and nearly 30,000 employees in four states, SSM is one of the largest employers in every community it serves. An early adopter of the electronic health record, SSM is now a national leader for the depth of its EHR integration. The addition of Dean brings the number of clinic/outpatient visits to 4 million annually.
Begun in 1872 by five Catholic sisters and today sponsored by the Franciscan Sisters of Mary, SSM Health Care looks for ways to promote good health among people in the communities it serves. It was the first health care organization to receive the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the nation’s highest award for quality.
