Physicians Take on New Role at St. Mary's

In recognition of the expanded role that physicians play in today’s dynamic healthcare environment, St. Mary’s Hospital is announcing an exciting new relationship with its doctors.  Now, rather than having a department chair structure, St. Mary’s will have seven physicians who serve as medical staff directors overseeing areas of clinical expertise.

The physicians and their areas of responsibility are:

  • Kay Barrett, MD (Dean Cardiology) – Cardiology, Cardiovascular Surgery, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Infectious Diseases, Oncology, Endocrinology

  • Lee Carter, MD (Dean Neurosurgery) – Neurosurgery, Neurology, Anesthesia, Rehabilitative Medicine

  • Tim Crummy, MD (Madison Radiology) -  Radiology, Pathology, Neonatology, Psychiatry

  • Jim Goodsett, MD (Dean & St. Mary’s Hospitalist)  - Hospitalists, Pediatrics, Critical Care

  • Anne Marie Lozeau, MD (UW Family Medicine) -  Family Medicine, General Internal Medicine, Dermatology, Allergy, Rheumatology

  • Kyle Martin, MD (Madison Emergency Physicians) - Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics

  • Jeff Welch, MD (Dean Orthopedic Surgery)  - General Surgery, Orthopedics, Urology, Plastic Surgery, ENT, Oral Surgery, Ophthalmology

These seven physicians will devote 25% of their time to this new leadership role.  They’ll work closely with other medical staff within the hospital and all departments to talk about ways everyone can work together to achieve exceptional results.  In addition to a focus on quality and patient safety initiatives, the physicians will also lead an enhanced peer review process and serve ultimately as conduits of change and innovation.

“Our current medical staff structure was designed many years ago when health care and the relationship between physicians and hospitals was very different,” says Dr. Frank Byrne, President of St. Mary’s Hospital. “The medical staff director program better reflects the significant change in how physicians now function within their practices, the hospital and as part of an ever-changing health care environment.”

St. Mary’s new physician leaders say the expanded relationship with the hospital will mean good things for the future:

“The chance to further the collaborative relationship between physicians and St. Mary’s Hospital is an exciting opportunity,” says Dr. Kay Barrett, who will oversee cardiology, endocrinology and oncology. “The vision underlying the medical staff redesign is our entry into the future.”

“In the Emergency Department the heart of our success was strong physician leadership melded with nursing leadership, speaking in a unified voice.  This will also be the key to our success in this new endeavor,” says Dr. Kyle Martin, who will oversee emergency medicine and obstetrics.
