Madison, Wis. – Mary Starmann-Harrison, SSM Health Care of Wisconsin’s Regional President & CEO, has accepted a position as the President/CEO of Hospital Sisters Health System in Springfield, Illinois.
Mary joined SSM Health Care in 1998, becoming the first regional president of SSM Health Care of Wisconsin. She’s been a proponent of keeping health care local and over the course of the past 12 years has improved health care access for the people of South Central Wisconsin. In order to achieve that goal she helped negotiate affiliations with Stoughton Hospital, Columbus Community Hospital, Upland Hills Health, and Edgerton Hospital and Health Services, along with a management agreement with Boscobel Area Health Care. In addition, Mary has overseen construction of the new St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital and the freestanding St. Mary’s Sun Prairie Emergency Center. She’s been absolutely essential in fostering the relationship between Dean Health System, Dean Health Plan and SSM Health Care of Wisconsin solidifying an integrated delivery system that continues to deliver exceptional care while controlling costs. Additionally, under her leadership, all four of the SSM facilities in Wisconsin were recognized with the Wisconsin Forward Award.
“Mary has been an exceptional leader for SSM Health Care of Wisconsin,” said Bill Thompson, President of SSM Health Care. “She will be greatly missed, but the mark left by her leadership will be ever-lasting. We wish her all the best in her new position.”
SSM Health Care of Wisconsin will immediately begin a national search for Mary’s replacement. In the interim, Jerry Lefert, the former president of St. Mary’s Hospital, has agreed to serve as Mary’s replacement.
“We are extremely grateful for Jerry taking on this role and know that with his healthcare leadership experience, it will be a smooth transition,” said Thompson.
The final transition plan is still being worked out and Mary Starmann-Harrison’s last day with SSM Health Care of Wisconsin will be no later than April 11th.
