Adult Day Health Center

"Nobody lives for the day more than we do." That's how manager Jim Penczykowski sums up his close-knit, gentle community at St. Mary's Adult Day Health Center. Staff members are more like family and volunteers say they get more than they give. It's the kind of place some clients build a life around. In this video, see the moments of fun and friendship that make up each day.

Adult Day Health Center

St. Mary's Adult Day Health Center provides day-long care for adults 18 years and older who do not require 24-hour professional care, but may need assistance with personal care, or activities of daily living. The Center is a place where adults with special needs can receive daily care while staying as active and involved with others as they are able.

Designed for caring and convenience

St. Mary's Adult Day Health Center program is specifically designed to conveniently meet the needs of both its clients and their caregivers.

The Center staff understands how difficult it is to turn over care of a loved one to others. A registered nurse, social worker, activity therapist, and other professionals work closely with families and physicians to ensure the best experience possible. A personalized care plan is jointly developed by the client and caregiver and the multidisciplinary team.

Social Services
The staff social worker is available to assist clients and families with problemsolving, identifying community resources, arranging transportation and providing assistance with client or caregivers' concerns.

Personalized Nursing Care
Services available include range of motion exercises, health maintenance, and help with daily living activities such as bathing and personal hygiene. In addition, the Center staff can oversee weight and blood pressure monitoring, blood sugar testing, medication administration, or other needs specific to individual clients.

Activities & Recreation
Clients are offered therapeutic activities including daily exercise groups, discussion sessions, cooking and craft workshops, music programs, creative art groups, and intergenerational projects. All activities are designed to maintain or improve cognitive, social and physical skills. A quiet, private space where clients can nap is also available.

Companionship
The Center provides a safe, structured environment where clients will have the opportunity to develop friendships with other adults.

Meals
Each day, clients receive a nutritious hot noon meal and nutritious snacks. The Center can accommodate special dietary needs.

Therapy
Physical, occupational, and speech therapy may be coordinated through the Center.

Transportation
Transportation for clients, including those in wheelchairs, may be arranged through the Center.

Who uses the Adult Day Health Center?
Any adult who requires help or supervision from others in day-to-day activities may apply to take part in the Adult Day Health Center program. All applicants will be interviewed and evaluated prior to admission to determine whether the Center can meet their needs. Clients may set up a schedule to attend from one to five times a week. Click to Watch David's StoryIt's not easy to get back on track when life throws you a curve. Just ask David Penn. He loved to dance and debate and planned to do so for many years but life didn't turn out as he planned. A debilitating stroke dramatically changed his course and led David and his family to St. Mary's Adult Day Health Center. Though he was skeptical at first, David found a warm and gentle community that helped revive his body, mind and spirit. Click on the image to the left to watch his story.
